Good news for New Zealand cricket supporters: Kane Williamson, a top Test batter, is back in the national Test squad. After being out due to injury, the right-handed star is in New Zealand’s 14-man squad for the first Test against the West Indies.
Williamson played his last Test match in December of last year. He skipped the Zimbabwe series in July to rest and manage his workload. Now, he’s back, which is excellent news for the Black Caps. They’ve really counted on his steady play, skill, and leadership. Before the Test, Williamson will play for Northern Districts in the Plunkett Shield’s second round to get ready for the international game.
With Williamson back, New Zealand’s squad now has seasoned players mixed with fresh, exciting talent. Fast bowlers Jacob Duffy, Zakary Foulkes, and Blair Tickner are in for the first Test. Duffy and Foulkes both played their first Test match against Zimbabwe. Foulkes really impressed, taking nine wickets for 75 runs—the best performance by a New Zealander in their first Test. Tickner is back in the Test team for the first time since March 2023, which makes their fast bowling even stronger.
The team’s getting a boost at just the right time with Daryl Mitchell back in action. He’s entirely recovered from that slight groin issue he picked up in the first ODI against the West Indies and is ready for the Test series. Mitchell’s a key player for us, bringing that mix of batting and bowling that New Zealand counts on, especially when playing at home.
New Zealand will have to play without Kyle Jamieson and Glenn Phillips, who are still working on getting back in shape after injuries, following a special plan. Matt Fisher, Will O’Rourke, and Ben Sears are also out because of shin, back, and hamstring problems.
The team for the first Test has a good balance of experience and fresh talent. Tom Latham is the captain, and Tom Blundell will be behind the stumps. Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, and Matt Henry are key players, with Will Young and Nathan Smith providing extra support.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter is thrilled about Williamson’s return, noting his skills and leadership. Walter said having Kane back in the Test team will be great because of what he can do on the field and the leadership he brings. He also pointed out the good work Williamson has done for the team over time.
The Black Caps are set to face the West Indies in the first Test starting December 2 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. With their star batter back in the lineup, they’ll be aiming for a solid start to the series.
